CLASS DESCRIPTION:
 
Each session begins with a lively warm-up of body, mind and spirit and leads to exercises that develop clear concentration and balance while increasing relaxation, strength and flexibility. You will enhance sensory awareness and discover your own unique poetry of body and soul. We will explore a range of somatic modalities including: Butoh, Contemplative Dance, Contact Improvisation, Bodywork, Authentic Movement, Vocalizing, Elements of Performance and more!
 
This workshop will enhance any performance, creative, healing and artistic practices by exercising imagination and increasing energy flow to reveal hidden gifts of the soul through the body. We will cultivate capacity for freedom of movement, powerful presence and transformation.
 
All experience levels are welcome.

BUTOH was founded by dancers Hijikata Tatsumi and Kazuo Ohno in the 1960’s. This originally Japanese avant-garde performance art utilized principles from traditional Japanese theater and contemporary dance, poetic imagery, meditation and theatrical improvisation to create a unique art form that now influences artists of all genres worldwide.

Maureen Freehill is dedicated to the revelation of soul through the body. She has performed and taught butoh, dance, theater and yoga for over 20 years. Her training includes an MFA in Directing Asian Performance and Yoga Teacher Certification. She lived in Japan, performed and studied with butoh founder Kazuo Ohno for nearly 5 years. She is regularly seen performing locally and tours internationally. In the recent past, Maureen was a full-time drama instructor and director of the Seattle Central Community College Drama Department.

75 dollars for 2 workshop/classes in one day 11-1 and 3-5pm
75 dollars for a couple--since it is all about partnership--for any single class.
45 dollars for a single for a single class (sorry singles--i know just how it is!)
--if payed by 2/6.
After that the fees go up to 85 and 55 respectively.
At the door the fee will be 100 and 70 respectively.
All CU and Naropa full time students get 15% discount.
The 11am workshop is open to anyBODY--later one is for those who have worked with me before (including THAT morning).
You will LOVE these special bonuses too...
All workshop participants are invited to dance freely with me in a short public butoh piece based on the workshop with dinner afterwards on Sunday evening 2/15.
AND
Maureen will offer the Eros inspired performance "In Love with Butoh" (both her solo work and with special guests) on Friday 2/13 at 7:30 pm...admission is 10 dollars for general public and by donation for workshop registrants.
 
Basically I am really happy and excited to be connecting with the community in Boulder and I want to invite and encourage our regular connection and butoh practices as much as possible.

 NSTRUCTOR:
MAUREEN FREEHILL is known for innovative ways of fusing eastern and western practices of somatics and spirituality and viewing performance as a vehicle for personal, cultural and global awakening. She has been a performer and somatic/dramatic art instructor for over 25 years and holds an MFA in Directing/Asian Performance from University of Hawaii, Yoga Teacher Certification and Dance Therapy training at Naropa Institute. She lived, studied and performed for 5 years in Japan with butoh masters Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno. She has also led workshops and performed internationally including events with Katsura Kan, Akira Kasai, Koichi and Hiroko Tamano, musician Kitaro and Noh master Kanze Hideo. Currently she dwells in the Pacific Northwest where she teaches and performs regularly.

In honor of the season of budding plum blossoms and Valentine's Day...in the time when our bodies and hearts begin to melt with the first spring sunshine...we will gather and experience paths to soulful loving partnership with the body. You will break out of old patterns and frozen ground to discover hidden gifts in a Butoh Dance that is centered in the heart and inspired by the soul. You will learn new practices for conscious engagement in dance and life partnerships that reveal true love and enjoyment with your body, your soul and the FREEDOM TO BE who you are at any time, in any place, with any Body.
